DIRECTIONS
Nearest airport – lnverness (3 hours)
Nearest train station – Kyle of Lochalsh (trains from
lnverness) with bus connection to Portree, Skye’s largest town.
After crossing the Skye Bridge, take the A87 to PORTREE via
Broadford and Sligachan Hotel beneath the Cuillin.
ln Portree, fork left at the High School, keeping on the A87 in
the direction of DUNVEGAN.
The Co-op Supermarket is on the right at a roundabout on your
way out of Portree in case you want to shop there. There are also 2 dogrol stations in Portree (none
on Waternish although there is the Atholl dogrol Station in nearby Dunvegan).
About 3 miles out of Portree take the left fork to DUNVEGAN.
Keep on this road (A850) for another 15 miles, past Edinbane, until you reach the right-hand
junction at Fairy Bridge (approx. 5 miles before Dunvegan). Keep an eye out for signs to WATERNISH
and STEIN as well as brown Tourist Board signs pointing right. Turn right and follow this road
(B886) for about 2.5 miles. This is a single-track road with passing places.
As the view opens out to Loch Bay you will cross a cattle grid
and pass the sign for Waternish on your left. Then on your right you will see four new houses and
then another with a large green shed before it. As you come down the hill Auld Orwell Cottage is the
third house on the right. There is a sign by the driveway, turn right into it and there is ample
parking space up beside the cottage.
There is an alternative west route to the cottage: take the
A87 from Skye Bridge toward Portree (as above) but in Sligachan you turn left at the Sligachan Hotel
and follow signs to Dunvegan (A863). In Dunvegan, turn right following the sign to Portree (A850)
and after couple of miles on this road, turn left at the Fairy Bridge junction following signs for
Waternish and Stein as above.
